February 5, 2016

Good Morning,

On Wednesday, we read the book The Wonderful Towers of Watts by Patricia Zelver.  A description of this true story can be found at http://www.publishersweekly.com/978-0-688-12649-0. The class then watched a quick documentary about the towers and Simon Rodia, the creator of the towers.  We then talked about how scientist will report out on their learning by writing for different types of publications.  We looked at an example of a newspaper article about a Lego maker and explored different components of the article.  The students then filled in an outline for their own article about the Watts' Towers.  Next week, they will write their own articles using their outline.

We also continued looking at the words of Martin Luther King.  The students have been drawing pictures of what they think Love and Peace look like to them or to Dr. King.  Next week they will be finishing up with Dr. King and then learning about Rosa Parks.

Notes:

*Thank you for the paper towel rolls.  We should be set with what we have.

*Your child has weekend reading.  They have a Time for kids sheet in their homework bag.

*Their Weekly News Journal is also in their bag.  Please take a moment to respond.

*A reminder that I am at my state meeting on Wednesday and in Washington DC on Thursday and Friday.

I hope you all have a great weekend.

Peace,
Tommy
