During these crucial first weeks, our primary focus is establishing a grounded, inclusive, and supportive classroom community. We spend intentional time getting to know each other, identifying student strengths, and co-creating an environment where every child feels secure, respected, and prepared to take academic risks.

Literature plays a central role in introducing foundational ideas about community, identity, and respect. We launched our reading work with three thoughtful texts:
Our Class is a Family by Shannon Olsen — Anchored our conversation about mutual respect, accountability, and supporting one another throughout the school year.
The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson — Prompted discussions on self-expression, identity,and the value of bringing unique perspectives to our group.

Beyond our group read-alouds, students jumped right into independent and collaborative tasks. We launched writing workshop with personal reflections on summer experiences, giving students an immediate opportunity to share their voices and return to written work.
We also introduced our primary classroom tools and established key daily routines. Predictable structure allows our multi-age 1st and 2nd-grade environment to operate smoothly, fostering independence and student ownership of their learning environment. Interactive activities throughout the week have also helped build connections across both grade levels.

Parents often ask why we dedicate significant time at the start of the year to routines, games, and social-emotional structures alongside academics. Research and practice demonstrate that investing time in the first six weeks creates a solid foundation for the rest of the year.
