April 30, 2014

Good Morning,
Yesterday, we continued our focus on the states of matter.  We are specifically looking at how heating and cooling can effect a state.  The 2nd graders have been diligently working on their research reports.  I will be sending you an update on those next week.  This update will provide you with their specific focus and allow you to start planning the presentation project with them.

Notes:

*There is an assembly tomorrow morning.

*We will have a bus evacuation drill on Friday.

I hope you have a great week.

Peace,
Tommy

Good Morning,

I hope everyone had a wonderful week away from school and found some exciting things to do.
I spent the week teaching in the Lawrence, MA. school district.  It was an amazing experience and the students were a pleasure ego work with.

The April break usually serves as a sign of a change in weather and the idea that school is almost over,.  However, we still have about 37 more days of school or about 20% of the year.  I talked to the students today about this and the need to stay focused and continue to produce our best as we progress through the month of May and into June.  May will prove to be an extremely busy month (in the classroom) and I need everyone ready to go each and every morning.

NOTES:
*There is an all school assembly on Thursday morning.  Kaiya will be presenting about our Focus on appropriate playground expectations.  Apparently there is a lot of great modeling (by students) that she has captured.

*We will have a bus evacuation drill on Friday morning at 8:15.

I hope you have a great week!

Peace,
Tommy

April 15, 2014

Good Morning,
Yesterday, we read letters from our pen pals and started our responses.  I have been asking the students to work on elaboration by focusing on a small moment and exploding that moment with details.  Their goal is to paint a picture win the reader's mind.

This week we will continue our focus on States of Matter.  Last Friday, the students were asked to change a liquid to a solid by making ice cream.

There is an assembly on Thursday.  Mr. Hill will be leading a play by 2nd-4th grade students.

Peace,
Mr. Young

Good Morning,
I realized that I never mentioned when Channel 3 will air the story.  It will most likely air at the beginning of May.  They are doing a 30 schools in 30 days piece and this will be one of them.  The reporter said that she would email me once they had a definite date.

The students were great with her.  It is funny what they will say. One student even stunned the reporter when they tied the project to their mother's mid life crisis.  The reporter actually had to stop the interview because she was laughing.  It is funny what kids will say.  She promised me that the reference wouldn't be int he final cut.

I hope you have a great week.

April 7, 2014

Good Morning,

I hope you had a great weekend.  It was nice to be outside in the sun (yesterday).  We sent the day sugaring with some friends and it served as a great reminder of what a beautiful place this state is!

I apologize for not posting the video to the blog on Friday.  I shared it with the students during meeting but had to leave school at 1:45 on Friday and forgot to post.

Here it is:

Notes For the Week:

1.  There is an Early Release Day on Wednesday.  The students will eat lunch at 11:10 and be released at 11:50.

2.  Mr Van Dine's Class will be hosting an assembly on Thursday.  His class will be reading poetry.

3.  PLEASE make sure your child has boots and a change of shoes during mud season.

A Note About Tardies:  The school has asked all of us to work on students arriving at school, on time.    We are now being asked to mark kids Tardy and to be thorough with this process.  Please remember that your child needs to be to school by 7:40.   I talked with the students about this today and wanted to give you a heads up as well.

Peace,
Tommy

April 2, 2014

Good Morning,

Well we all survived April Fool's Day.  I hope all of the kids shared their Brown E's with you.  Today, we finished our thank you letters.  Each child has their letters and envelopes in their homework bag.  They just need to be addressed and sent out.

On Friday, the Channel 3 news will be coming to interview the students about the Heifer Project.  The story might not air right away.  The reporter said they are doing a 30 Schools in 30 Days project and they might include this story in that.  She will let me know.

*Each student has a Time For Kids magazine to read tonight.  Some of them may need help with some of the Proper Nouns in the articles.

Peace,
Tommy
