Good Morning,
I hope you all enjoyed the sunshine this weekend.  Although my family was involved or watched 7 basketball games, we still managed to enjoy the spring like weather.  Although, I did measure the kids feet for x-country skiing on Wednesday, my gut tells me the snow might be gone.  Either way, we will go visit our pen pals on Wednesday.

Today I talked with the students about what a symbol is and what some of the Vermont state symbols are.  We created the first part of our table of contents and wrote our book introductions. Tomorrow we will research some of the symbols as a group and then start writing some of the other chapters of our books.

FREE LUNCH FRIDAY:  The students have been sitting by table groups, in our classroom, since the start of January.  Each table has been competing for a free lunch.  It is based on the number of WE ROCK tickets that they get for being responsible, engaged, safe, and/or kind.  On Thursday, we will do our final count and the winning table will be provided lunch (pizza) on Friday.

Ms. Ally has been working with the kids on a very exciting and engaging drum unit in PE class.  The kids have found this to be a highlight of their day and even week.  I want to give a big shoutout to Ms. Ally and her creativity as she finds new and invigorating ways to tie in movement and the arts.

I hope you all have a great week.

Peace,

Tommy

Good Morning,

I hope you are all having a fabulous week.  I need you to please read through the following information regarding next week's field trip.  We will be headed to TBPS on Wednesday, February 22nd.  We will be going to meet our pen pals, to eat lunch, and then xc ski with them.  Our drivers will be Will Rounds, Jennifer Whittingham, and Chris Badger.  We will be leaving our school around 10:30 and arriving back before dismissal.  IMPORTANT:  If your son/daughter will need a school lunch provided, please fill out the form that is in your child's homework bag.  I need this returned on Monday in order to turn it in Fayston on time.  If your child can bring their own lunch if they desire.  TBPS school has enough equipment for everyone.  However, if your child wants to bring their own, I need it brought to school and please have it labeled.

This week we started to move away from our focus on procedural writings and have turned our attention to writing books that inform.  We have spent some time looking at published non-fiction books and the similar components that each piece has.  Each child will be creating their own non-fiction piece that focuses on some of the Vermont State Symbols.  This allows me to tie in Social Studies with our writing curriculum.

I hope you all have a great weekend.

Peace,
Tommy

Good Afternoon,

I hope all is well and everyone had a great week.  I was out of the classroom this morning for a doctor's appointment.  Today the student's sat in a presentation about China.  Katie Shea, the daughter of Barb Morrison, came to our school to present on her year and a half abroad.  She has been teaching english at a university and immersing herself in the Chinese culture.  She spoke about the common language of Mandarin, the population of the capital and of the country itself.  She also explained about life in the north (where she lives) and they explored the idea of zodiac signs and the role they play in Chinese beliefs.  The students saw plenty of amazing photos and asked some really great questions.

Update on Pen-Pal Field Trip:  We have three drivers and myself for the field trip.  Would love to get one more if possible.  We will be eating lunch at TBPS that day.  Our school will provide a bagged lunch option or your child can provide their own.  Please let me know if you would like our school to provide a bagged lunch that day.

Valentine's Day:  Each child has a list of names for Valentin's Day in their homework bag.  We will pass these out on Tuesday afternoon.  The kids would also like to have a few treats.  If you would like to bring in a snack or drink, please let me know.

NOTES:
*Your child has reading homework in their bag.
*Each student has a Weekly News Entry in their homework bag. Please take time to read it and respond.

Peace,
Mr. Young

Good Afternoon,
I hope you had a great week.  We have been busy with a variety of activities.  The students continued their focus on procedures in writing class. Each student is writing about how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  We will eventually take these to Harwood and work with a freshman english class on editing and revisions.

Field Trip:
As I had stated on Monday, we are planning on going to visit our Waterbury pen pals on Wednesday, February 22nd.  I am looking for a few drivers for the trip.  We will leave here before lunch and return by 2:15.  Chris Badger and I will both drive too.  If you can help, please let me know.

Weekly News:
Your child has their Weekly News journal in their homework bag.  This week it was their topic choice.  Please take a moment to read their entry and respond back.  We will read the responses on Monday Morning.

I hope you all have a great weekend.

Peace,
Tommy
