March 31, 2014

Good Morning,
Wow, I can't believe march is over.  It certainly went by quickly.  This week marks the start of two different projects.  The first graders will be working on a surprise project for the second graders with Mr. Mongeon.  The 2nd graders will be working on reports with me.  These projects will take about a month and a half to complete.  The 2nd graders will present their projects to the class in June and the 1st graders will have their projects presented at an evening gathering in June.

The thank you notes will be head home with your child on Thursday.  I ask that you help them fill out the envelopes and mail them.  The writing itself will have been completed.

I hope you have a great week.

Peace,
Tommy

Good Afternoon,
A very quick post today ( I have 10 minutes to write).  We wrote our thank you notes for our Heifer Project sponsors.  They will be sent home next week.  I will elaborate more about this on Monday's post.

I hope you all saw the Valley Reporter.  There was a great article about the project.  Here is the link: http://www.valleyreporter.com/index.php/en/news/schools/9769-waitsfield-students-raise-funds-by-reading   You should also check out this link http://www.neafoundation.org/blog/lessons-learned-empowering-young-students-to-act-globally/ .  The NEA Foundation created this quick video and used my blog posting to promote global education.

I hope you have a great weekend.

Peace,
Tommy

March 26, 2014

Good Morning,
Yesterday, Rachel from the Valley Reporter came in to interview the students about the Heifer Project.  They did a great job of answering questions and describing how they felt about the project itself.  There should be a story in the paper this week.  We've had more checks come in this week and are around $3,500!

Over the weekend, I will be sending each of you an email with a request for pictures.  The students will be writing their final draft of their non-fiction books.  They have identified some pictures that they want to include in their books.  I am hoping you can email the pictures that your child needs (i.e family, pet).  Each list is unique to your child's book.  There are some pictures that I get get from here.  If you have a hard copy of a photo, I ask that you take a picture of it and then email it.  These don't have to be of the highest quality because they will be in black and whit when I print them.

I will be out tomorrow morning.  I have to participate in a district wide lesson study (for 1st grade teachers).  I will be in after recess.

Have a great day.

Peace,
Tommy

I hope you all had a great weekend.  It was great to see everyone during conferences.  I hope you found them informative and productive.  If you have any further questions, comments, and/or concerns, please feel free to contact me anytime.

I am hoping to have the students finish the drafts of their non-fiction writes this week.  I may be asking for some pictures from home for these.  If you could email me the requested photos, that would be great.  You can always take a picture of a photo with your phone and send it that way too.  Your child will bring home a list of photos they included in their book.

The film crew was here again today.  They filmed today's math lesson.  Ask your child how it went and what they thought of the experience (1st grade only).

Here is a long overdue video of the last two months.

Have a great week.

Peace,
Tommy

March 19, 2014

Good Afternoon,

I am looking forward to meeting with each of you during our parent conference time.  Please make sure to bring your child's report card.  I like when the students can attend the first 5 minutes but understand if it is easier to leave them at home.  The conferences are lined up back to back.  If you are at another child's conference (prior to mine) please make sure to end on time.  I can't adjust as we go because other families are trying to hit several other conferences too.  I thank you in advance for your understanding and respect of this request.

As of yesterday, our total collection for the Heifer Project was (drumroll please) $3,020.85.  However, yesterday a Teacher from Moretown dropped off a bag of coins that they had collected.  We will add that up on Friday and add it to our total.  Again, this is just amazing and a job well done by the students.  They really will make a difference with this contribution.

I hope all is well with everyone and that you have a great evening!

Peace,
Tommy

March 17, 2014

Good Morning,
I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.  I still have two people that haven't signed up for parent conferences.  If you haven't and would like to, please do so today.

The students continued working on their non-fiction writings today.  We also started a grammar book. During the next few weeks, I will spend the first ten minutes of writing reviewing or introducing grammar, use, and mechanics skills.

We did not have Reader's Workshop today.  The A Cappella team from Harvard University was visiting our upper unit music classes.  I thought our class would love the opportunity to hear the group and Mr. Hill allowed us to sit in.  One of the team members, Sara Reid, was  in my first class at Waitsfield Elementary School.  The group sang a few songs for the kids, had them participate in a few warm up activities, and also learned how to Beat Box.  Below is one of their songs.  A few students even had a chance to conduct the group.

In the past week, we have gone to school 3 days and have hd 4 off!  We got back into a little groove today. Today, we counted the money that has been turned in for the Heifer Project.  We are weigh around $2,000.00!  This was absolutely incredible.  I know there are a few more families still collecting and the weather has made that process a little more difficult.  We will be counting our final total next Thursday and the students will be going shopping two weeks from today.  I am going to make three teams of 5.  The teams will each get 1/3 of the total collected and then use the catalog to buy items for Heifer to donate.

I am hoping to have a media outlet (some form) come and interview the kids about this process.  This is why I am pushing the shopping back until April 4th.

REMINDER:  We have mapped the location of many of our sponsors.  If you haven't sent in the location of your child's sponsors, please do so.

I am finishing up this week's video and hope to have it on here after school.

Have a great weekend.

Peace,
Tommy

March 10, 2014

Good Morning,
I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.  I asked the class to vote on which day was better for them Saturday or Sunday?  Saturday had the most votes but it was close.  Personally, I enjoyed the sunshine that Sunday brought.

Today we continued to work on our Non-Fiction books.  We used our writing time to continue to work on our first drafts.  The students also shopped for new books in their Read to Self bags.  Prior to vacation, I tested each student's reading level.  I was extremely happy with the progress and can't wait to share the results with you during our Parent Conference.

Notes:

*Please sign up for a parent conference time.  Here is the link: https://www.canyoncreeksoftware.com/scheduler/vt/wwsu/index.cfm

*Please make sure that your child has something other than boots to wear at school.  I still have 3 or 4 kids forgetting to brings shoes/sneakers.  This is especially problematic on PE days.

*Heifer money is due Friday.  Also, please make a list if where each sponsor lives.  It will help us create the visual representation on our classroom maps.

That is all for now.

Have a Great Week

Peace,
Tommy

March 7, 2014

Good Afternoon,

I hope everyone is well.  I am sorry I didn't post Wednesday, but I simply just forgot to write something.  For those who have not yet done so, please make sure that all of the Heifer Money is turned in by next Friday.  Also, please remember to send in a list of the city and state of each sponsor.  We are mapping the information to help create a visual of how far our message has spread.

I hope you have a great weekend.  The movies will start back up again next week.

Peace,
Tommy
