Good Afternoon,
Today we read the story There Are No Bears In This Bakery by Julia Sarcone-Roach.  This is a story about a tough gumshoe of a cat named Muffin who protects his territory: The Little Bear Bakery. But there are no bears here. Not on Muffin's watch. One night, Muffin hears a suspicious noise. Mouse? Raccoon? Bat? Nope, not the usual suspects. But Muffin hears . . . growling. Could it be? Yup. A bear. Just a cub. Whose stomach is definitely growling. Muffin's got this case solved--clearly this bear needs some donuts.  Below is a read-a-loud version for your enjoyment.

Good Morning,

Today's read a loud was I Know A Wee Piggy.  "This book is a clever, colorful read-aloud in the tradition of I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. A fun day at the fair becomes color chaos when one boy's energetic pig gets loose. Upside down, piggy wallows in brown, but that's only the beginning of this cumulative, rhyming text. Soon, he's adding a rinse of red (tomatoes), a wash of white (milk), a pinch of pink (cotton candy), and many more. Can piggy be caught before he turns the whole fair upside down?"

If you would like to hear the story read again, please play the video below.

Good Afternoon,
Today we read the story Dragons Love Tacos. We found out "dragons love tacos. They love chicken tacos, beef tacos, great big tacos, and teeny tiny tacos. So if you want to lure a bunch of dragons to your party, you should definitely serve tacos. Buckets and buckets of tacos. Unfortunately, where there are tacos, there is also salsa. And if a dragon accidentally eats spicy salsa . . . oh, boy. You're in red-hot trouble."  Below is a reading of the story.

Good Morning,
I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy some of the beautiful weather last week.  My goal was to be off my computer during the day and enjoy the great outdoors.  I have to say, not only did I meet my goal but I enjoyed every minute of it.

I am keeping track of the books your child is reading (that I assign) and when he/she turns in their completed writing prompt.  I have included the links (below) so you can keep track of what your child has done and turned in.  Every time they complete and turn in a book & questions and/or a writing prompt, they receive CANDY!

Today's Read-A-Loud:
Today we read the invisible boy by Trudy Ludwig. "This story of kindness shows that the smallest gestures often have the biggest impact.Meet Brian. No one notices him. No one includes him. He just feels invisible. But everything suddenly changes when a new student named Justin arrives. A bit of creativity helps form a new friendship, unleashing Brian’s lively personality and vivid imagination. This high-spirited musical, complete with fun songs and heartfelt humor, will help us all discover the possibilities that begin with a simple act of kindness."

If you would like your child to watch a performance of the book, check out below.

That is all for now.  Have a great Monday afternoon!

April 17, 2020

Good Afternoon,
In lieu of a phone call this week, I am doing a quick email.  The expectation is that kids take next week off.  Please give the kids a break from computer time and school work.  We will start back up on April 27th. I will not be answering or checking school email during break.  If you need to email me, please wait until 4/26/20.  Every student will have work to be picked up on Monday 4/27.  I have already bagged it up.. However, since next week is vacation, no bins will be outside, you will have to wait until 4/27.

Enjoy next week.

Peace,
Tommy

Good Afternoon,
I loved how our Dr. Seuss world brought us snow again.  Just joking!  I hope you are all well.
There has been some misunderstandings with Zearn, so Mr. Hubbard and I created a "cheat sheet" to help you with how the process works, once your child has completed a Mission (unit).  Please check it out here.  I will also send home a hard copy with each child's work on the Monday we return from April break.

During Meeting, I asked students to draw a picture of what they want to do next week, during April break.  Here are the pictures that I received.  Take a look below and maybe steal an idea for relaxing next week.  I also included some more from yesterday's photo challenge.

Good Morning,
During morning meeting we talked about it being a "library day" and I asked the kids to get a picture of themselves reading in their favorite home reading spot.  Please send along a picture and I will add it to this post.

If your child needs popcorn delivered for our viewing of the BFG, on Friday, please let me know by today.  You can email me or text my cell.

GOOGLE MEETS SUCKS:
That pretty much sums it up.  Today we had the most technical difficulties that we have had.  Zoom has made the necessary adjustments and our district will be allowing us to go back to that platform.  We will be switching back after the April break.  During the break I will switch the meeting links over in the learning hub and on google classroom.  I also want to hold off until district allows all of their assigned devices to access Zoom again.  Imagine the headaches if I switched and people couldn't get on.

That is all for now.  Have a great day and get outside and enjoy the sunshine.

Peace,
Tommy

REPEAT POSTING AS A REMINDER:
Classroom Project:
I want to document how the the class and their families are doing their part in fighting this pandemic.  Over the next week (by 4/21/20), I would love for you or your child to capture 5-6 photos of how they are tackling this.  It could be pictures of walks with families, using video conferencing, wearing a mask or anything you feel captures it.  I also would like one of the photos to be of your child (an d family if you would like) wearing their Waitsfield School Shirts and making a sign that says we are Waitsfield Elementary School or W. E. S.  Once you have your photos, load them in this folder.  I will work on the project during April break.  Let me know if you have any questions.

April 13, 2020

Good Morning,

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  I have to say I really enjoyed being off my computer for the weekend.  I found myself spending a ton of time outside and enjoying the sunshine.  My kids have been using this time to build some new trails on our property.  They have built themselves a nice campsite along the brook and their April break will be spent building bridges along the trails to cross over the waterways.  I love that this is what their quarantine looks like.

Today's Morning Meeting was great.  We did our usual routine and we paid tribute to Mr. Hill's music class by singing a Raffi song.  We also took a trip to the San Diego Zoo to look at some of the live web cams.  I have to say the California animals are way more laid back, a lot of them were still chilling in bed. We did see a few including a true penguin plunge.   If you would like to view any of the web cams, check out this link.

SPIRIT WEEK #2:
Last week, some of the kids chose a theme for each Morning Meeting.  It's a way to keep the students vested and I hope breaks up the routine enough to add some additional enjoyment into our meetings.  Participating in the theme days are strictly optional. Below are the kids choices for this week.

This Weeks Themes:
Tuesday:  Red Day
Wednesday: Stuffy Day
Thursday: Pajama Day
Friday: Movie and Popcorn Day

Thursday will mark the completion of our BFG read-a-loud.  We had started this book back in February and the kids had asked if we could watch the movie.  I had told them that we could once we read the book.  So, Friday we will watch the BFG as a class.  I will stream it through our Morning Meeting link.  We will do a shortened meeting and then watch it.  Feel free to allow siblings to join.  I will ask the everyone mutes their microphones during the meeting.  That way everyone will be able to hear.  It will also be popcorn day.  If you don't have popcorn, NO WORRIES!  Just email me by Wednesday, tell me how many people need popcorn and I will deliver it Thursday evening (to your mailbox).  Make sure you also include your address and marking your mailbox may have on it.

April 9, 2020

Good Evening,
So what's new?  Just kidding!  I always liked the movie Groundhog's Day but I am actually starting to feel a little bit like Bill Murray's character.  In all seriousness, I hope all is well with each and everyone of you.  I am sure you all are quite busy balancing the needs of your family, your jobs, and staying on top of all of the needs of your child/children.  I just want you to know that I am very impressed and grateful for all of the support you are giving them.  As always, please let me know if you are needing anything or even if it is just a need to reassure yourself that your are on top of it all.

Friday Phone Calls:
As you know, each Friday I call each family to check in.  The point of these calls is to act almost like a small parent conference.  If gives you the chance to ask for any clarification on things and it gives me a chance to update you on your child's weekly progress.  Now that we have entered our "Continuity of Learning" phase, I feel it is crucial to help each child keep up and not get behind in their work.  When I call, I will be discussing their pace fo work.  This is not a critique or a questioning of what they have been doing, but rather advice on what I hope to see for the coming week.

GOOGLE CLASSROOM
Yesterday, I sent sent you a link to a video about Google Classroom.  The video can be seen here.  One thing that got overlooked was that when you log into your child's google account, you will see their username and the "@huusd.org" must be added to that.  For example

Username: jyoung2020@huusd.org
Password: ***********

That is all for now.  I hope you have a great evening.  REMEMBER, tomorrow's theme is Wear the Color Blue (chosen by Riley).

Good Evening,
Today we launched the use of Google Classroom.  What this mean for students in my classroom?  Not much in the sense of how things have been running.  However, I have to say I love the organization of it.  I made the following video that walks you through how to log on and how to use Google Classroom.  Please watch this video before emailing with questions on Google Classroom.  The Learning Portal is still an option but I think kids can navigate Google Classroom more independently.

April 7, 2020

Good Afternoon,
Well we survived our first day of Google Meets.  I am glad it went as smoothly as it did.  The video captures the kids dancing to our Tuesday song tradition.

I have put out  the new writing folders, with new paper and edit sheets.  As I explained yesterday, we will be starting a different type of writing focus next week.  Students can still work on informational books, if they choose to, but the prompts will be expected to be turned in to me.  I am keeping a log of the prompts, the date we did them, and the genre of the prompt.  To view the link you can click here:

During today's writing lesson, I introduced a prompt and helped kids complete an entire one.  If your child missed the lesson, you should spend some time, on Wednesday, watching it with them and then helping them answer the prompt.  I outline the expectations in the video.  Click here to watch the writing lesson.

April 6, 2020

Good Afternoon,
As I mentioned, during this mornings Morning Meeting, today was the last day that we will use Zoom for a call.  Tomorrow we will start using the Google Meet platform to host all live classroom meetings and instructions.  Please watch the following video to learn about that platform and also some information about what writing will look like starting next week.

Change in Writing Instruction and Focus:
As I stated in the video, I used the weekend to reflect about how writing instruction is going and I have decided to do one more week of our books to inform unit and then will switch our focus.  The main drive behind this move is the frustration that I felt several kids were having with the distance writing instruction.  I spoke with Kaiya, over the weekend, and explained my thought process and will be shifting the focus to students writing good paragraphs based on a variety of writing prompts.

On Tuesdays, I will introduce a prompt and we will spend the writing instruction time to start responses to the prompt.  The students can then continue to work on them on Wednesdays.  On Thursdays we will review responses and then start a new prompt that will be due Tuesday.  You should send completed prompts in after they are finished and have shared them out.

The focus will be writing good paragraphs with correct grammar, use, and mechanic skills.  As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Theme Days:
During Morning Meeting today. the students voted to have a theme for each morning meeting.  Her are the themes (and the kid who suggested it) for the remainder of the week.
Tuesday: Stuffy Day (Caden)

Wednesday: Pajama Day (Adele)

Thursday: Costume Day (Leif)

Friday: Wear the Color Blue (Riley)

That is all for now.
Peace,
Tommy

April 3, 2020

April 3, 2020

Good Early Evening,
Well we have finished another week of virtual learning.  As a whole, I am very happy with the progress and work that everyone has been doing.  I appreciate all of the support that you have given your children in this world of virtual learning.  I have to say in a time where this is much negativity, it is a pleasure to sit with 6, 7, and 8 year olds and just have fun.  To me, the Morning Meetings are the best thing we can offer kids at this time and I appreciate that kids are joining.

T-Shirt challenge.  Below are the two entries that I received today.  Thanks for sharing!

I was glad to connect with most of you, on the phone, today.  I will use my Friday phone calls to check in and see if you need anything and to let you know how progress is going with your child's work.  Now that this is the means for which your child will be taught, it is important that I monitor work and can prove that your child met core standards by the end of the school year.

As I mentioned in my calls, we will now be taking attendance.  If your child is at Morning Meeting, I will note their attendance and you won't have to do anything else.  If your child doesn't attend meeting, please email or text me one thing that they did for school that day.  This way I can count them as "present."  Any text/email after 2:00 pm that day can't be used because I have to submit attendance by 2:00.  Easiest way will be to just join the Morning Meeting.  I apologize if this is an extra burden but this is my first time ever having to collect virtual attendance.

Today's Video
Morning Meeting

Monday's Schedule
Morning Meeting at 9:00.

The above schedule is "suggested" in the sense of when you do what.  The work listed is expected each week as we move forward.  I have put a lot of thought into limiting as much screen time as I can, being able to collect evidence of your child's learning, and feel as though they are doing meaningful work and not just "busy work."  If you are have any questions, please feel free to let me know at tyoung@huusd.org or call my cell.

The Judy Project:
Today, during Morning Meeting, I read a letter from our classroom volunteer Judy.  She wanted the kids to know how much she missed them and coming in to work with them.  During our virtual Morning Meeting, The students made letters or pictures for Judy.  I thought it would be nice to mail them to her.  Her address is:

Judy D'Este
45 Mehuron Dr. #4
Waitsfield, VT 05673

I know it will mean a lot for Judy to receive some mail from our class.

That is all for now.

Peace,
Tommy

April 1, 2020

Good Afternoon,
I hope you all survived your child's day of April 1st pranks.  You may want to impose a 24 foot social distancing rule, with them, for the remainder of the day.  No one will judge you and all will understand the move.  Your choice!

During Morning Meeting, I challenged the kids to get a picture of them reading outside (today).  This was in honor of Wednesday typically being our library day with Eric.  Here is the picture I received of one student reading "above" most.

Today's Morning Meeting Link

Tomorrow's Schedule:
*Morning Meeting @ 9:00
*Live Writing Instruction @ 10:00

Now that distance learning looks like it will continue for the remainder of the year, I am working on a general schedule, that may help your set up a schedule for your child each day.  This will only be a recommendation and you may have your own routine in place.  I will use my Friday phone calls, with each of you, to check in on progress and field any questions you may have.

That is all for today.  I want to thank all of you for your hard work and support of your child's learning during this unique time.  You are all superstars to your family and I am much appreciative for all that each of you are balancing.  Keep up the great work!

Peace,
Tommy
