February 11, 2022

 Good Afternoon,

Another week has come and gone and we are only one week away from winter break.  Here is what happen during the week gone by.  This week we focused on making comparisons in our writing of reviews.  I showed them how it can help convince the reader, of the writer's opinion, if known comparisons are used.  The students then spent the week focusing on this strategy as well as editing their finished pieces. Math had the first graders working with learning how to use the open number line.  You can watch the below video to gain an understanding of what this concept is.

Ms Figdor had this to say about her 2nd grade math class."This week in second grade math we wrapped up a mini unit introducing equal group multiplication. In our next unit we will be working with numbers up to 1,000. We started the unit off by reading a book called How Much, Many, Far, Heavy, Long, and Tall is 1000? The idea of this book is 1,000 can look very different depending on what it is you have a 1,000 of. After reading this book we estimated the magnitude of a basket full of mini popsicle sticks. When we started counting collections in the beginning of the year, many of the estimates were guesses. I was excited to see that this time students were justifying their estimations in various ways. During a counting activity, students learned to conceptualize the magnitude of numbers as well as what it looks like to regroup in our base ten system. In Number Corner. We have continued to explore basic fractional thinking as well as telling time to the nearest 5 minutes."

On Monday, the students had a chance to celebrate, as a school, for earning so many recognition cards for their behavior.  The students were treated to a sledding and hot chocolate party at the end of the day.  It is always great to see the enjoyment of these earned celebrations and the joy of being outside on a nice sunny and fluffy snow kind of day.

February 6, 2022

Good Morning,

Well the weather certainly dictated this school week.  Between the winter sports day on Wednesday and the 2 snow days, it certainly made it a very quick week.  In writing, the students continued writing reviews.  We started with the students helping me write about Yogurt City.  We looked at ways a writer could make the reader feel like the writer was talking directly to the reader.  The students then chose something they wanted to review.  We will be working on reviews over the next several weeks.

PE class was the talk of the class last week.  Ms. Ally had set up the gym into a disco tech bowling alley, complete with a laser show.  The students were very excited about it and it certainly seemed to be the highlight of the day for many of them.  I have included some pictures that Ms. Ally shared.

NOTES:
*We will have the winter sports program again on Wednesday. Remember, I don't send homework bags home on these days.

*I will be out Thursday morning.  My wife is away and taking care of her mom for the week and I have to get my daughter to PT that morning.  Mr. Cadwell will be leading the class.

*Over the years, I have found the students get extremely excited to hand out Valentines.  I love the idea of students giving positive messages to each other.  We will have time on Monday, February 14th to hand out these things.  Here is a list of names for your child to reference.

Kylar, Milo, Isla, Hayden, Margaret, Lydia, Hadley, Olivia, Rowan, Lena, Ben, Tobin, Berkley, Sierra, Hunter, Hardin, Koji, Georgia, Arlo, Miles, Quinn,

That is all for now.  Have a great week.

Peace,

Tommy
