Good Morning,

Today the students worked on a variety of culminating projects.  The first graders spent some time with Mr. Mongeon.  They have been busily working on their secret projects.  These will be presented at the evening event on the 16th of June.  The second graders practiced reading their reports and continued to work on their photo projects.  We also checked in on our splint experiment and completed an entry in our science notebooks.  This afternoon the students had math and art.

I hope everyone saw the yellow note that I sent home yesterday.  There was some very important information on it.

I hope you have a great weekend and maybe I will see some of you at the GMPA recital.

Peace,
Tommy

Good Morning,

In lieu of a blog post, I wanted to send home a hard copy of some important information.  Please take note of the following:

1.  Pen Pal Field Trip: No one indicated that they would need a school  lunch prepared.  So, I am going under the assumption that each child will be bringing a lunch.  One of the students, from Thatcher Brook , has a severe nut allergy.  This means the food that your child brings, must be nut free (not just peanuts but all nuts).  Please be diligent in preparing your child’s lunch for that day.  Again, the trip is June 17th.

2.  Our class will be having an evening event on Monday, June 16th at 6:00.  This will be a short event that will feature the students photo projects from the year, a writing sample, 2nd grade research projects, and a special presentation to the 2nd graders from the 1st graders.  The evening should be no more than 45 minutes.

3.  Field Days will be June 16th with June 18th being the rain date.  Kids should wear clothing that will allow them to get wet, shoes that will allow them to run safely, and sub block.

2nd Grade Parents

Two weeks ago, you signed up for a time when you could come in and listen to your child present their report and project.  UI put them on a clipboard so I would not loose them.  Now I can’t find them!  So, could you please take a moment to sign up for a day and time again.

The dates available are:

6/11
6/12
6/13
6/16 (Morning Only because of Field Days)
6/18 (Morning Only because of Field Day rain date)

Good Morning,
We decided toe at our snack outside today.  The students have enjoyed utilizing the new outdoor space that was created during our artist in residency week.  The brook and stone wall are definite hits.  I am hoping to have a little raft contest during the last week of school.  The students would build popsicle stick rafts and then float them down the brook.  We would time them and graph the information.

Notes:

*Spring Concert tomorrow night.  Please be int he gym by 6:00.

*Field Trip Money:  I still need $4 from Riley, Bella and Jackson.

*If you would like your child to have a bagged lunch from school (on our field trip day). Please let me know, via email, by Friday.

I hope you have a great Wednesday.

Peace,
Mr. Young

Good Morning,

I hope everyone the beautiful weekend.  It was nice to have such sunny days and be able to do so much outside work.  There is a few things that I need each of you to take note of.  I will also send home a hard copy of this post.  Please make sure to read through it carefully.

Concert:  This week Mr. Hill will be putting on the school's Spring performance.  The students should arrive int he gym between 5:50 and 6:00.  The show will start promptly at 6:00.  I will not be able to attend this concert.  Thursdays are a busy evening for our family and Julianne is in Stowe (for dance) and Abby has soccer and dance too.  My wife have to divide and conquer on these days and unfortunately this prevents me from being able to attend the concert.

Pen Pal Trip:  We will be headed to see our Waterbury Pen Pals on June 17th.  As part of the trip, we will be going to Ben and Jerry's.  As stated in a  previous post, the cost is $4 a student (for ice cream, the tour is free).  So far, I have only received money from 4 students.  Please get that in this week.  IF you would like to chaperone, please let me know.  The cost for each chaperone is $6.

Evening Event:  Each year, I usually hold some kind of evening event.  This is a chance for the students to showcase specific pieces of work.  It usually runs like an open house and then we have a culminating event to finish off the evening.  This year the kids would be presenting their photo projects.

I am curious if people are interested in this or is June just too crazy (with everyone's schedules).  I am looking at doing it on Monday June 16th from 6:00-6:45 in the gym.  Is there any interest or would people rather just have the stuff presented as part of the school day?  Please let me know by this Friday.  If I don't hear from at least half of the class, I will forgo the evening event and just do it during the day. I am fine doing either but am trying to accommodate everyone's busy schedules.

That is all for now. Have a great week.

Peace,
Tommy

Good Evening,

Today we spent some time in the garden clearing a perennial bed.  In a couple of weeks, we will go outside and plant the flowers that the garden committee assigned to us.

  Here is the residency video:

Good Morning,
I have scheduled a field trip on June 17, 2014.  We will be heading to Ben & Jerry's with our pen pals.    We will leave school at 8:30 and head to TBPS.  We will spend some time with our pen pals and at 10:40 we will head to the factory.

The kids will take part in a tour, eat lunch, have some ice cream, and play on the playground.  We will depart from Ben & Jerry's around 1:30.  The cost of the tour is free for kids under 12.  The cost of the ice cream cone is $4.  I will need this money by May 24th.  If you are writing a check, please make it out to Waitsfield Elementary School.

If you would like to chaperone, please let me know by the 24th as well.  If you choose to do this, I will need an additional $6 for your tour and ice cream cone.

This should be a fun event and a great way to interact with our pen pals.

Peace,
Tommy

Good Afternoon,
I had every intention of putting the artist and residency video on the blog today.  However, I left my iPad at home.  I will put it on Monday's post.  Today the students completed the States of Matter assessment.  They had to create their own experiment for the question:  Can you make one ice cube melt faster than the other?

The students also wrote int heir Weekly News and focused not he residency.  We also worked on our reports and the 1st grade projects.

Notes:

*2nd Graders each have an important note about their report and home project int he ir backpack.  Please take a look at it.

Have a great weekend and Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms.

Peace,
Tommy

Good Morning,
Today was day three of the residency.  We had trees and ferns being planted, plaster being poured, and a bunch of masons breaking rocks.

There is no homework tonight.  I want them to enjoy the sunny afternoon.

Peace,
Tommy

Good Morning,
Today marked the start of our Artist in Residency program.  Each of the students chose an activity that they would like to be part of for the entire week.  This will happen from 9:00-10:00 everyday.  Please make sure your child has boots and dresses appropriately.  After each day's session, I will ask that the kids take 20 minutes to journal about that day's experience.  I will keep these journals for grading purposes but will send them home at the end of the year.

The residency schedule cuts into our reading instruction time.  The kids will have reading homework but I will only be meeting with one group a day.

I hope you have a great week.

Peace,
Tommy

Good Morning,
We started our day with a good old fashion bus evacuation drill.  It is important to know what to do in an emergency situation.  Although not all kids ride the bus to school, they all take part in field trips and will end up on the bus from time to time.

The Channel 3 news will be airing the kids story tonight.  It will be on the 6:00 news and also available not heir website.  The WCAX website has a tab that is for the 30 Schools in 30 Days on their site.  Click on that and you will find the segment.  Yesterday, the students each received two books from the Heifer Project.  These are for them to keep at home.

Notes:  The Artist in Residence program starts next week.  Much of the work will be taking place outside.  Please make sure that your child dresses for the weather.  Boots are highly recommended.

I hope you have a great week.
