April 30, 2012

Good Morning!  I hope this is post is finding everyone happy, healthy, and rested.  I truly enjoyed the week off and am ready to take on the craziness that is May.  We will have a a very busy month that will include finishing our forces and motion unit, completing the both individualized math and reading tests and turning our school timeline into a play to be presented at the end of the year.  The play will be part of an evening celebration that will also feature each students individual timeline.

Today, we will have Fundations, our literacy block, and math.  The students will also have PE and library.

There is reading and math homework this week. I forgot to send home a math survey last week.  Apparently I was distracted with the thought of vacation.

Peace,
Tom

Good Morning,
This week, we have continued our work with our plant seeds.  The trays are now being watered and placed underneath the grow lights.  Students have been recording (in their science journals) about the process.  Below is a video clip of our Morning Meeting activity on Wednesday.  We were playing musical chairs.  Some of the kids had some interesting dance steps.  I was having fun trying to figure out which parent taught their child the dance moves.

Please remember to fill out the math survey on Thursday evening.  I will not be posting a blog entry on Friday.  I hope you have a great week and a wonderful vacation.

Peace,
Tom

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  We had our annual spring cleaning bonanza at our house.  As crazy as May gets, it is nice to have a jump on things.  This week we will focus on getting the rest of our seeds planted and under the grow lights before vacation.  This will take place during our station time and on Tuesday afternoon.

There will be reading homework this week and a math survey sent home on Thursday.  Please make sure to fill out the reading log each week and try to play the game at least two times.

Just a quick reminder about vacations.  As I outlined in the beginning of the year, I ask that your child read and journal everyday that he/she is away from class.  Once you have returned, schedule a meeting with me so we can make a plan to complete missed work.  I will also ask the student to present their journal to class upon their return.

I hope you have a great week.

Peace,
Tom

Here are the words for our class song:

The Waitsfield Song   -written by Mr. Young’s Class and Mr. Hill

Waitsfield Vermont is very old,
More than two-hundred years since it was formed.
Seventeen-hundred and eighty eight
Is the year that it was born.

Chorus
Waitsfield, Waitsfield with your snowy mountain dome
In our hearts this Mad River Valley
Will always be our home.

People in Waitsfield make maple syrup and
Our farmer’s market can’t be beat
Crafts and meats and organic veggies
In the midst of summer heat.

Chorus

In the winter when snow is falling
We go skiing and sledding too.
Snowboarding, skating, and snowshoeing
Are some outdoor things we do.

Chorus

Good Afternoon,
We had a great day today that included an assembly, some work in the computer lab, and some seed planting.  Some of the students also played the role of photographer or videographer during the seed planting.  Below are a few photos that the students took.  I hope you have a great weekend.  I am thinking it will be a nice night for a family campfire.

Peace,

Tom

Good Morning,
We had a wonderful morning.  The students were quite productive with their writing and reading groups today.  They are all working on a response to literature piece of writing.  Today's specials were French and Music.  There is reading homework tonight.  We will have a teacher visiting from another school tomorrow.  She will be in to observe our Morning Meeting and Fundations times.

Peace,
Tom

Good Morning,
I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.  It was nice to get outside and "play" and spend some time with family and friends.  Today we read the story Princess Penelope by Todd Mack.  This is a story about a little girl who is convinced her life parallels that of a princess.  The students will be using this story as they write a response to literature this week.

Our current science unit focuses on properties and the states of matter.  We will be working on this unit through mid May.  The unit after that will focus on plants, and we will talk about them as a system.  In order to get ready for this unit, we will start our seeds this Friday.  Once we get into this unit, we will be using the garden as a teaching tool.  Each classroom has been asked to find a parent or two that would like to be that classroom's garden liaison.  Please let me know if you are interested.

Peace,
Tom

Good Morning,
This morning we continued working on our timelines.  Many of the students are entering the picture phase of the project and are making their final choices for their timeline.  After that, we went back to the classroom and worked on a community service project.  The coordinator of the Valley Green-Up Day is asking for students to make posters to advertise for the event.  I thought it would be a good way of helping the community and covering this aspect of our curriculum.  We hope to have the posters down by Tuesday.

I am sorry I forgot to post on Wednesday.  It totally slipped my mind.  Have a great weekend.

Peace,
Mr. Young

Good Morning (actually writing Sunday evening),
I hope you had a wonderful weekend.  During our February vacation, I found out that I was selected as the winner of the Angelo J. Dorta Excellence in Teaching Award.  This is an award presented yearly by the Vermont Education Association.  This past Saturday, I was honored at a ceremony at the Lake Morey Resort.  I will now represent Vermont in the National Competition with a chance of receiving $25,000.00.  I will be traveling to Washington DC next February for the national event.

Today the students will have Fundations, stations, and math.  During stations the students will start a new writing project, work on their sight words, read a new issue of Time For Kids, and have reading groups.  A few of the groups will work on assigned Literacy Project work as well.  Today's special will be PE and Library.

I hope you have a great week.

Peace,
Tom
